1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

They messed up Goldsmith's Star Trek theme

That's not the impression I'm getting here, and not what I personally meant by my comments. It's not a nostalgic argument, it's about changing a single note that even trained composers can't discern between accident and choice, and passing it off as a "development" on a theme written by a superior composer, as if that improves it somehow (perhaps not to the same degree, but it makes me think of Kenny G soloing over Louis Armstrong, or Max Richter's "Vivaldi 'Recomposed'" [in the case of the latter, the title is what's rather heinous). I don't see the artistic merit in that, especially because I would wager that a lot of the people who will be watching this series won't be Trekkies (just like new Star Wars films don't appeal to thoughtful fans of the originals), and it's a trend found at many levels of production in Hollywood (attempting to cash in on old gems and "improve" on them). I appreciate the discussion it prompted from Mike, because that was a great mini-lesson.

I think the other discussed pitfalls of Hollywood are relatively easy to spot -- reboot old franchise/series or remake film because "hey, it worked" or "hey, we'll lose the rights"; appeal heavily to nostalgia to emotionally ensnare old fans (see here:

cover up lack of writing or story ideas via many convoluted subplots, overuse of CGI and bad cliches, etc. I agree that we don't need to hash the general point about the nosedive in AAA film quality over the last few years, because it's mostly preaching to the choir here, but that's not the impression I got with this thread.

  2. Holy cow I just caught up with this thread. I just learned that it was Jeff Russo who did the trailer (and he's also doing the series.) I happen to like his work. According to the rumor mill he just messed up.

  3. Have to withdraw my last post. Found this on FB from someone else:

UPDATE: spoke to composer— on his behalf I will post for him.

    1. yes he was reading this thread! Imagine if your (or my) comments could have been hurtful. I apologized.

    2. This is what he said “not a mistake, a choice... lots of reasons to change the one note, but the short of it was tone and feel (not to mention producer notes)... I knew exactly what I was doing and actually happen to know that piece of music very well.”

  4. Well, at least we know it was on purpose and not an oversight. I understand the motive behind it. But I still like the Ab better.

Interesting that the composer for the show was asked to do the trailer, too. Usually they get someone else. I'm curious to see how he handles this, I liked his Fargo soundtrack.

I thought Fargo was well done too.

"Imagine if your (or my) comments could have been hurtful."

I don't know what went on in the facebook thread, but as far as this one goes, the looming threat of having feelings hurt doesn't invalidate criticisms on a controversial decision. I'm not interested in offending anyone, insofar as that entails attacking a person's character or making criticism needlessly slanderous, but I'm glad this particular forum is about critiquing and building craft. I had a suspicion "producer notes" may have had something to do with it.

You know the producers of that composer reminds me of the creative team of Vince McMahon from WWE. Jon Moxley nailed it on Chris Jerichos Podcast a week ago: They simply suck! Its one of the reasons why this hollywood is going to crap because these people seem to a bunch of noobs (or simply ignorant people) who shouldn´t be allowed to take care of such material. I believe that the composer knew what he was doing but its imo his task to tell the producers then: Look this is a very bad choice and you are just making that theme sounding bad.

  7. I never say anything critical I'm not: 1) prepared to defend/explain 2) would say in person 3) willing to help with.

Here at Redbanned, honest criticism is the gateway to helping each other improve. Nobody wants to delight in another's failures,we want to learn from them. We are all in it together.

I'm disappointed the composer reads the threads here but isn't a member. He's exactly the kind of person that should be posting and contributing and seeking to elevate himself - even more so because his work is helping to shape the public discourse and expectation on media music.

As for, "The producer made me do it," too bad you can't put that disclaimer on the screen. Be careful who you're working for. They take you down with them.

  8. The way I understood it that text is from a facebook post from where Sean extracted it, implying the thread he was reading was the FB one and not this one in particular.

  9. I think that was in reference to the facebook thread. It would be great to get someone like him on here.
