1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

The VI-Control "Situation"

Discussion in 'UNIT M3' started by Mike Verta, Jul 2, 2017.

  1. Actually, you are absolutely right, I sat down with it the entire yesterday and it really is a great learning tool.

  2. No reason to choose... They both have different skews. This is definitely more on the composition side of things... I asked mike last night about a run on the mill john Williams wind ensemble and I got a direct answer. On TSB There are some who could answer it - but I feel like most of them would probably offer the advice of whatever sounds right/library ect - and generally I don't feel like the same level of interest is there, because their focus seems to be more on the end result. That said, if I have questions on plugins, mixing/reverbs, ect - that's more or less something that they're all interested in. Infact I think if I wanted to know the absolute worst flaws of a library, that's the best place to go. Some of those guys have laser ears.

Not saying that I can quantify this, I just feel like TSB is more geared towards VI composers who focus on the end result, and Redbanned is more focused on the music itself. And honestly Mike's so musical that he a.) could have really meh mixing skills and would still pop out musically and b.) might be in a situation professionally where someone else ends up doing the mixing/mastering for the end product most of the time.

both places can have both discussions - but that's how I separate participation, and it sits well. I mean, "it just sits well" with me.

side note, I also feel like if you have any sort of political conversation - TSB is about as left as a university. Redbanned is definitely more centrist. (I think mike is a beacon of right wing thought, which alone might cause a bit of balance in an otherwise liberal community) Ofcourse you could play it safe and not discuss politics, ethics, or sociology at all - but if that's something you enjoy engaging in, There will definitely be a difference between the general "tilt" - if that helps sort things out for you.

And Mike, Thanks for ****ng this f****. ;D

  3. You're so biased. At least give the kid the option of Cubase as well!

  4. I bailed on VI years ago and was mostly checking it for library announcements and Verta classes. So this place is perfect for me (I can get the library news anywhere.) Had no idea about the drama but not all that surprising.

  5. I don't know that anybody will learn anything from this site. I don't know that anybody will become a measurably better composer as a result of this site. I can't know that. But what I do know is that the majority of discussions and content on this site will be centered around people trying. And I know that cannot be said about VI-Control nor really about any other site I can think of - at least not in the way and with the flavor I encourage here. And that's why Redbanned exists.

  6. I already have. I learned a lot from VI-control, but I've probably learned more about composition and found more encouragement in the craft here than on VI-control in general, barring a few very helpful and kind individuals. I'll go there if I want info on VI's, but for the craft I find myself spending more time here. The last few times I visited VI-control I stumbled more upon threads about how difficult the industry is than anything else, which is of course rather unhelpful. Your own encouragement about maintaining integrity and dedicating oneself to the craft regardless of what the work looks like (in terms of notoriety, "working in the industry vs working", not working for jerks, etc) has been conversely very inspiring during uninspiring times.
