  1. Yes, pretty much true also what Luke sais.
    While I have nothing against it and like talking about libraries and their characteristics I feel tired recently about all those a vs b library as well, not because of that topic in general, but because there are sometimes days where every third thread is about that and they just bring no news answers to the table. People seem not to use the search engine that much it seems.:D

  2. Exactly. Google is the new human brain. I find it amazing how there can even be a "Is CSS better than SCS?" type question. Well, no is the answer. They are both different sizes, recorded in different rooms, with different players, different instruments and different engineers. How could there ever be any answer other than "They are both different". I knew this before I bought both of them because I just watched the walkthroughs and read everything on Google. It's really basic stuff. Anyway, I'll stop bitchin.
     
  3. I just watched the All That Jazz masterclass. Jazz has never been something that I got into as a classically trained pianist - I got so excited I've picked up the Levine book, ( I already had the real real book I copied from a jazz pianist whom I knew from deep research program into single malt whisky).

    (What is it about jazz guys and whisky ?)

    I am so excited about this in a way that another library could never do. Some of these chords are insane. I'm saving up for some more fingers.

    That's what I really like about this place - it's about the important stuff first.

Library A vs B and so on is just a natural part of the conversation Imo, head to a guitarist forum and you'll find the same discussions going on about guitar A vs B, strings A vs B, Amp A vs B and so on. It comes with the trade of being a composer to discuss the tools of the trade I would suggest.
    That having been said, I totally understand that people get fed up with seeing the same things get discussed ad nauseam, and see new members ask the same questions while not really understanding that there is no such thing as "B is better than A because" answer that fits all situations.

  6. Absolutely. But the irritating thing is nobody ever uses the "search" option. I, like many before me, have asked, and still do ask for opinions on products but I only do after searching and reading the plethora of knowledge already shared. Anyway, it's not the end of the world is it
     
  7. The Mark Levine book works more like a referrence than an entry point, if you find yourself struggling with the material inside, the Mark Harrison books are a great explanatory resource.

  8. Indeed. But I do hope this forum stays more in the realm of craft and challenging ideas related to said craft over tools, as there are plenty of other areas where people discuss gear to no end.

    I actually don't think the "keep up or competition will crush you" applies that well here. VI's are obviously important tools, but it's composition skill that will make you a better composer, not the tools.
     
  9. I'm still waiting on the definitive answer on which is the best pencil to use when handwriting scores. I've researched this and the collective wisdom seems to be split between a red one and a blue one....

  11. My only issue with this these questions is that the only good answer is to post a shootout. Same material, maybe even same midi, no processsing, and let people just listen and make a decision. But this rarely happens- instead you get post after post of people essentially trying to justify their own purchases through their opinions and arguments. The exact same thing happens at gearslutz with mics, preamps, and synthesizers. "It just sounds warmer!"

  12. I am literally teaching my little boy to learn to evaluate useful data from a pool to combat the fact that so much of the world is like this. There's a huge amount of information - we have to be able to sort out the useful from the not useful.

    One of the Cardinal rules I gave him is that if somebody's opinion contains the word "just" it means they have no intellectual argument to support it. "I just think..." means they precisely don't have a position they can defend argumentatively, otherwise, their argument would be where the word "just" is. Sometimes if you push a couple rounds they'll reveal they actually have an idea there but more often than not "I just think" leads to more "I justs."
     
  13. This is probably the most useful thing I learned in university through philosophy and grueling years of human research statistical analysis. We're drowning in information in the age of the internet, and yet relatively basic reasoning or even the simplest of philosophical concepts such as what does and does not constitute a logical fallacy aren't part of mandatory gradeschool curriculum (although relatively complex/useless math concepts are).

    This doesn't happen nearly often enough. The most useful threads I've seen are a "post X solo cello with this MIDI mockup" (of course allowing for tweaks). Two audio files are worth 30 pages of discussion.
     
  14. Modern educational curriculums make even less sense to me now than they did when I was rote-memorizing my way through straight A's as a child, wondering how I was able to get away with it. It's at least half the reason we decided to home-school. And absolutely one of Draco's regular lessons is Logic and Debate. Truly things that should be basic. We cover fallacies and correlation/causation, reasoning... Of course the downside is that now every single thing is a negotiation in his mind but I'd rather that than the alternative. :)

  15. Haha, indeed a side-effect, but learning to have an teachable/humble mind and a sharp ability to reason is far more important than I ever heard emphasized. I suppose it's also a good time to teach about trust and why not every required task requires debate.

    We're considering the same on our end, though here in western Canada the curriculum is changing quite dramatically, finally being based on learning theory and ending up as much more similar to the Finnish education system which has been considered the world's best for quite a stretch of time. Even in my gradeschool days not terribly long ago, the curriculum was horrid and I was convinced for a long while that I was stupid because I was constantly bored in class. I still find it counter-productive now, as it fundamentally didn't teach us to be task-oriented; it rather taught us how to fill time, productively or not.
     
  16. I wish there was a way to group thesoundboard and redbanned members as I don't like choosing a community to ask my questions or posting the same thing to both places.And the only affection I have left for Vi-C is Hans posts there.

    Another problem with internet and information flood is people just don't how to be brief. I mean when you ask for help and people do try to help, you shouldn't whine about their neverending dragging but I can't help it sometimes. Being brief should be an ability everybody has.
     
  17. That sounds like a change for the better. Hopefully the first classes to 'cross over' won't suffer from a school system that's just not ready to be launched (or severely flawed to begin with).
    I had to go through that twice in High school, plus once in University and it was absolutely horrendous.


    Btw. Mike, I was sorta following your discussion in the chat yesterday but I had to leave for a bit.
    I left the window open so I could catch up later but the chat only kept the last 40-ish minutes at which point the discussion had shifted to production values.
    Too bad because you and Kyle (?) had an interesting back and forth.. I like the chat but it's a pity some of it gets lost in the ether

  20. It's apparently working well in one of the private schools near here in which I have teacher friends. Kids staying up until 1am, completely out of their own merit, to work on an invent-your-own-probability-machine math project simply because they like it.
