No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Should I score a film in 7-14 days??

Discussion in 'How to Score a Film in 7 Days' started by Jaroslav Pevno, Feb 1, 2019.

  1. Those guys, who asked me to do the demo for them, shot their entire film on REDs. And they had some experience, mostly documentaries, shorts and commercials. So this problem occurs not only at the lowest end.

  2. Here, in my market, for commercials we usually charge per second and write into agreement 1 or 2 rewrites. And nobody getting royalties. TV channels decline all content with copyrighted music.

@Jaroslav Pevno Maybe you could ask a payment for only that little demo, independently if they willi hire you or not, so your time spent will be worth.

@Alexander Schiborr About the payment do you require the whole payment upfront or something like the half at the beginning and another half before you deliver the last pieces of music?

However it's true that you also could be asking them a demo for of the film so than you can see if you like it or not... but you don't. Instead you decide based on their past works, so the same thing they have to do with you.

    (Very interesting discussion!!)

  4. @Daniele Nasuti That is exactly what I was going to do, if they decide to proceed this.

  5. No, not all. A partly payment, depending on the budget. I normally go like with 25-30 Percent of the estimated budget.

  6. ah ok, and they give you the rest of money before or after your final delivery?

    thank you!!

  7. Well, I do send them the final version as an mp3, and once I get the rest of the money, I deliver to them the High quality masterfiles. Works pretty well.

  8. Dude, wow that sucks they ended up not using it at the end... what a dick move on their part. That's good they atleast paid you something for your hard work even if it isn't much. Oh, and it's funny you mention the"magic" sound because the Kia commercial I did ended up being about 90% Ukeleles and Claps lmao!

  9. Ukulele is the "epic cinematic hits" of commercials.

I think what not enough people understand is for every time they allow themselves to get trampled, it brings that expectation down to every other composer on the market. If no composers put up with lowballing and undervaluing, maybe media teams would start appreciating music more. And if not, go ahead, use library music -- it will sound generic, but many composers tend to make more money off library songs anyway.

  10. This could easily backfire - most people can't tell the difference and .mp3 is fine. Wouldn't recommend this, but glad you've not been burned yet. Simple contracts; half-up front, half on delivery and auditioning my clients carefully has worked for me. We spend way to much time and energy rationalizing what we often know are shit deals from the beginning. I took plenty of horrific work at the beginning of my career and was happy to have money just to eat. But beyond the sandwich, there's almost nothing to show for it. But sometimes the sandwich is enough. If you already have a sandwich, find better people to work with.

  11. I've turned down relatively well paid jobs that was leading me away from what I wanted to do with my life, and I had opportunities to work in the top studios here where I live. But I would rather live on sandwiches and enjoy doing what I love the most, than getting sick by a fancy 3 piece meal with rotten relationship that might come with it. Very early I made a rush decision to switch to full time composing music. And it took a lot of sandwiches before I finally got my first film scoring job. Which has only added a bit of fancy sauce to my diet. But I've come to the realization that it's not about what I eat, it is about how I enjoy the meal with the people I'm having a dinner with.

  12. Maybe would be a good idea to send audios like audiojungle (with that voice who say audiojungle each 20 seconds or so..) and then when they pay will send normal audios??
And if this is ok, then how can I put something that they can't erase with that process used by someone to delete lyrics from songs to have only instrumental?

  13. If you're reverting to all this sort of stuff, then you're obviously in the wrong relationship to start with. Why are you fucking the pussy if you don't trust the pussy?

  14. What are the chances a rhetorical question like that would devolve a thread on the internet ?
