No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Bunch of Template (and real orchestra) Questions

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Rohann van Rensburg, Jan 3, 2019.

  1. There are no rules for that. I'm doing a concert right now that has sections with 4-way divisi for each of the violin sections. Depends on the circumstances I guess

  2. You can find scores in which every violin is divisi. (Zimmer's Last Samurai) (Pendereki)

It really comes down to what can be perceived. That also depends on the type of musical material, and it's context within the piece.
Unified harmony, or contrapuntal writing needs proper balance. It's a waste to have people doing things no one will hear.

Henry Brant has a good book on orchestration that covers this in detail.

The other thing - for real players - is how you prepare the parts.
As you can imagine when the divisi get complicated you have to think about page turns and proper layout.

It just depends on too many factors to not take a prescriptive approach to the specific piece.

  3. Ah that's a good point. I can't, off the top of my head, think of violin sections playing with zero vibrato. Perhaps in early baroque, or folk fiddle playing, but not anything in the symphonic repertoire. Good call.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll incorporate them into my template. I hadn't considered 8dio but I will. I'm paying for Composer Cloud right now, and while convenient, I don't like the idea of renting, especially from a company that rarely updates or releases. Do you layer all these or pick just one or two?

  4. Hi Doug! I mean, it's only been a week or two, but was starting to wonder where you went.

Interesting, I didn't realize Zimmer's Samurai score had that, but then again I haven't listened to it since studying composition. Aleatoric passages obviously have this too, good point. I suppose balance and intent really is key.

Actually, come to think of it, there are passages in the LOTR Symphony that have 4 way divisi: LOTR Divisi.png

  5. Frommy "some day I'll complete this and release it string orchestration tutorials". Have one on the house

  7. How timely! Thanks Doug, been a while since I watched these. Definitely finish it!

  8. I don't really understand why people obsess about divisis. I remember it all started when LASS came out that it became a thing in the sample world. When you see divisi in scores it rarely means that the section is doing two different roles.

When I get MIDI from composers that have divisi sections I end up with 6 different violin roles and it all loses focus.
