1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Slow loading speed on masterclass video

Discussion in 'Info, Requests, etc.' started by Mario Zeffiro, Apr 12, 2019.

  1. Hi everyone, this is my first thread and I'm really excited to be part of this forum, so I apologize if this isn't the right section to post it.
I've recently purchased my first masterclass "the terminator", I'm currently watching it, but... I find it terribly annoying that the video goes on buffering every few seconds (at 720p). I only have this problem when it comes down to vimeo, I can watch videos smoothly at 1080p on YT, so I deduced I have some kind of problems with that specific website.
I tried with chrome, safari and microsoft edge so far, but had no luck... I wanted to buy more classes, but I find it difficult to watch a video that buffers that often.
The alternative is to watch the video at a very lowquality, that might not be a problem if there is only a keyboard and the webcome on the screen, but if the scene gets more complex I doubt I would be able to follow along...

What should I try to solve this problem? Is there another platform I can watch the masterclasses from? (I'm based in Italy)

  2. Welcome!

You could try just downloading it and watch it offline in any regular media player program. Unless the error persists over a long time it's also possible it's just a temporary issue with the vimeo server that will go away on its own.

  3. Thank you! I've tried the download option and it takes like 5/6 hours to download a video (average 400Kb/s) and the download can't be stopped or it needs to start from again from the beginning.
I'll try leaving it on during the night.

  4. If you're getting such low download speeds from the server it explains why you can't stream it. You'd need to be able to download the video in less time than the length of the video to be able to stream. If either your connection or the server makes that impossible, then you can't stream without those super annoying buffer pauses. On some sites it works to pause the video and wait a couple minutes for the buffer to fill. The total length you'd need to wait for buffering buffer would approximately be the difference between the length of the video and the total download time.

Afaik vimeo encodes at higher bitrate (and quality) than youtube, so it's possible that 720p on vimeo needs more bandwidth than 1080p on youtube, though I'm not 100% sure.

  5. Yea that makes very much sense. I think it was a weird platform choice to go for vimeo instead of YT, but I guess Mike had his reasons.
By any chance do you know if the masterclass rhythms and perc, the mod squad and the structure are all done with Mike speaking in front of a virtual keyboard, or they also use notation and written words?

  6. Vimeo is a service you pay for and thus have much more control. With youtube you're at their mercy and I think they don't support password protected access to videos, even if they are unlisted.

Think of the classes as "recordings of a live stream", because that's what they are. So usually there's no onscreen text, and he's sitting at the piano, with the virtual piano on screen. Rythm and Perc is one of the few classes where he's sitting at the computer and using other virtual instruments for his examples. Structure and Mod Squad are at the piano again, but he's playing back examples from finished tracks here and there. I would think of the Rythm and Perc class as "orchestrating for the percussion section" because imho it's more about the different colors and dynamics instead of different types of rythms and their uses. I liked it a lot, but it wasn't quite what I expected based on the title.

  7. Vimeo works great to link to, but it's a really annoying platform to navigate and find things. Works well for Mike's classes, not so well for random videos.

  8. If you have the access to the masterclass video, Allavsoft can download them offline to your computer.
It also helps to download from youtube, vimeo etc
