1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Masterclasses with a lot of showing how it works?

Discussion in 'Info, Requests, etc.' started by René Gade, Mar 30, 2020.

  1. A question to owners of these masterclasses and Mike Verta of course. I have Comp 1, 2 and 4, counterpoint, theminator, orchestration 1 and 2.

My favorite (or favorite moment) is "Orchestration 2" - The part where Mike is first talking, then showing in his template how it works/sounds, experimenting, discussing and trying different ideas, playing it/recording it so it is clear what effect it has, how it sounds. Making music. For example, Mike mentions doubling cello figure with harp, and that's just something I never would have thought of, and that gave me a lot of new ideas too. I get (by far) most out of these examples, hearing and seeing how it works...that includes, of course, listening to orchestral music (with "analytical ears"), I do that too. But seeing and hearing how ideas are composed, build up from idea to actually music is really great, and really inspires me, gives me ideas and makes me more aware of the possibilities when writing for orchestra.

I'll like more of that. Which classes has that element?

My background: I play the piano, mostly jazz, I have composed most of my life, but almost never for pure traditional classical orchestra (mostly electronic music). So I'm interested in some tricks and tips for ochestration colours, how to "think orchestral composing" presented in this way, with examples, showing how it works.

    So...any ideas? [IMG]

    I have my eye on:
    Secret Weapons
    Kickstarters
    Here's Johnny
    Orchestration 3 - presets
    Template balancing
    Rythm and perc

  2. I think secret weapons and Rhythm and percussion is exactly what you are looking for. Also Here's Johny! (I'm watching it right now since I just got it ;))

Kickstarters may be below your level right now if you have watched all these I assume. Don't really remember what was in there exactly.

I don't know of template balancing or orchestration 3 though.

What I can highly recommend, what you have not on your list and not yet watched is 'Putting it all together'. It's a run down of how Mike did The Race. It was really good in my opinion!

  3. Watching Rythm and perc now. Yeah, exactly that! Thanks! (The template balancing is another thing I have to look at, and hope to get some insight and tips in that regard).

  4. I think you'll like the class called Putting It All Together. Mike breaks down his score for The Race, and tells you more of the how and why he made the choices that he did. It also includes a copy of the score for you to look at - or to use to check your transcription ;). Actually, I think there are a two versions of the score, a focus score, and a regular full score.

Template Balancing - Mike shows his process for building a template for virtual instruments

Orchestration 3 - Mike re-orchestrates the same idea many ways, giving you a sort of orchestration presets list
