1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Learning and Progressing forward

  1. Hello Everyone,

I just joined the group after watching Mike on YouTube.

A brief background, I am a film composer in my country and usually I would end up composing for films and it would be fine, till the time everything started to sound the same and I quickly lost interest in scoring for films. I started to watch videos online to up my game and all they did was frustrate me further because I had all the tools but there was a huge learning gap in the way that my mind would hear something but when it comes to programming and achieving it I would completely suck at it. I realized that my entire foundation is broken. I realized I sucked.

Lo and behold, I started learning, I saw everything that I could possibly can and would try but to no avail. I kept on struggling. Finally though, I decided that in order to go where I do want to go there will never be shortcuts, so I decided to go slow and steady everyday. I am self taught, but I lacked having mentors guiding me. Now, I want to break that paradigm and reach a new plateau. I wanted to join this community for 2 reasons:

1: A kick on the behind to get on with it.
2: A group that would take me through the learning and guide me to take things the right way.

So, if I was (am) a beginner, what and how should I go about learning something new. Where do I start. How do I start?

My aim is to be able to communicate stories effectively through music.

  2. "How do i start?"
I think the simplest way is just actually start composing a lot of scores. Compose music daily.
There is some things you can do to improve your scores which is:
1: Buy Mike Vertas Master Classes and take notes.
    https://mikeverta.com/product-category/masterclasses/
2: Buy scores on Amazon or any other website and study them deeply. (dover scores are great)
    3: Transcribe pieces you like.
4: Get feedback on the forum.
Posting some of your pieces here on the forum is a great way to improve. Others can notice things which can be hard to notice oneself.
5: Always be aware of your own weaknesses in your compositions and try to improve them.
A good way if it isn't obvious at first what your weaknesses are is to analyse scores and notice the diffrence between that one and your own piece.
6: Create an environment which makes you set a higher standard for yourself.
One way to do this is to listen a lot to the great composers such as John williams, Ravel, Franz Liszt etc. Read books about great composers, watch old films where the music was a higher standard than it is today.

If you are looking to get a teacher for composition some good ones are Jjay berthume and Alan belkin you can check them out on youtube.

  3. Hi Ahmed, welcome.

I think the most common answer you will get here is: Transcribe.

And I will qoute Mike's answer in this thread: https://redbanned.com/threads/masterworks-a-comprehensive-collaborative-list.502/
