Composer looking for feedback

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Jure Jerebic, Oct 21, 2018.

  1. Hi everyone,

Name's Jure Jerebic, I've been composing for media for about a year now, but have been playing keyboards / piano in various bands etc. over the last 18 years. I'm now working with several publishers, both in production music as well as for a major trailer music publisher, and working with a good friend of mine on our own brand too, where we are building our own catalogue and trying to pick up some work in TV, film and ad.

Anyways, like probably many of you, I've watched all of Mike's videos and got a number of fellow composers also hooked on him (haha), and I have learned more from his videos and masterclasses, that I've also taken, than from anyone in my life.

I'm always trying to further my writing, composition and orchestration skills, so I'm looking into some tips on how to further in these areas.

Here is a track (as well as my demo reel) that I'd like to get some feedback on.

Thank you to Mike and everyone else, this place is amazing.

  2. Piano is percussive; pizz is percussive. Stacking one on top of the other is good for layering, but doesn't have great contrast; it's not great if you have them doing different things, as you do here, where you're hoping to use pizz as a "melodic" motif. And when that pizz enters, it seems to be playing the role of embellished intro, but it doesn't "intro" anything until almost a minute in. If this idea is not just a "get them up to speed intro," then it needs to prove that by developing on its own, and not just repeating for 50 seconds or whatever, because its nice simplicity also gets boring quickly. Remember, vertical development is not development. It's changing how you say, not what you're saying. Also, the use of strings at the 1 min change is very unnatural - strings wouldn't represent that way, that presently, in that soundfield, unless being artificially boosted. That's fine, I guess, but it's also bullshit, so you'll have to make a call on that. Personally, I've found that using instruments in ways they couldn't actually perform is sort of the musical equivalent of when you see people in a movie in a military helicopter, but they're speaking at a normal volume - somewhere your brain knows that's bullshit, and it would be way louder, and it's just sort of disconnecting. It would not be hard to let that punchy-chords thing you're doing be carried by stuff other than just strings, to increase clarity and presence. Overall, things feel a bit homogenized and the simplicity of your idea, while wonderful, also demands you to do more with it. The vibe, however, seems really clear and direct, and that's always good.

  3. Hi!

Well, nice uplifting piece there. When I would change something... imho pizzi strings are way over the top playing..I doubt a real orchestra would be able to perform in that way how you let your samples speak here for several reasons like tempo, precision and also the dynamic layer at what they are performing constantly.. Thats not realistic to let them perform that stiff and that loud. (bleeding fingers..). Then you add more strings..on top of that. I think thats a awkward choice in orchestration tbh. I would go for something else carrying the melody..-> winds (clarinet, oboe) or brass (F-Horns). But then the vibe is different on probably not what you are after. Maybe a percussive melodic instrument? Then that scratchy raspy strings are one minute..more strings..well you love your strings a lot :D I think the orchestration here is just dull and doesn´t utilize a typical way of how I like orchestration but thats just my opinion and taste, so nothing to worry about. You know as a general thing: Cool orchestration lives from diversity.
This kind of track I have heard a million times in all that media library music and if you are after that...then well done..because all this kind of music is like that and doesn´t really need to uzilize anything realistic or tasteful orchestration and you are delivering whats in demand. So..there is this thing: Are you writing music for yourself or to sell it for commercials and other stuff. so..honestly..just do that stuff how you do it here because I think nobody in the media landscape would complain that there is something wrong. But if you want to write some real music which doesn´t shit on classic repertoire and style and treating realism in samples respectfully ..then probably you should take a deeper look at classic film soundtracks and study orchestration for a couple of years extensively.

  4. Wow, thank you Mike (and Alexander) for the incredible feedback. I can say this is the best feedback I've ever gotten. Honestly, since I write (for now) production and trailer music, where it doesn't really matter that much if the parts can be performed live by an orchestra, I'm not too concerned if I write the pizzicato strings like that - I know that wouldn't work if I gave that to string players. If I ever do get to write something to be performed by an orchestra, I would of course take into consideration that, and other things I've learned (how long they can breathe etc.). What would you say should be the skill I should focus on next, to get better?

I can't thank you enough, this is amazing! I owe you both a whiskey :) Or a Kölsch beer to Alexander, if you're ever near Cologne or Bonn ;)

Its free. I heard just one track from you. Hard to say. Is that the best track you have done so far? What are your own goals in music? Any composer you like?

  6. I do a lot of different things, here's my demo reel to give you a better idea, on SC (the link in the original post didn't work): /jurejerebic/sets/demo-reel/s-HqzVH

I like a lot of different composers, but I mostly listen to contemporary film music, anything from JW to Olafur Arnalds, etc. Actually going to see JW live in Vienna with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2 weeks, cannot wait. My goals in music...Not really, just work on things I like, and grow as an artist - I think it's hard to have a goal when you just keep writing music, and eventually get better. I do it only part time, as I have a full time job that I like a lot as well.
