1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Looking for Reference Scores

Discussion in 'Template Balancing' started by Sam Miller, Jan 15, 2018.

  1. I'm yet to find an appropriate reference track that I can also get the score for.

I've been using Adler's Orchestration to get a rough intra and inter-family balance, but now I'm moving on to Z-depth (EQ, Reverb, Delay, etc.). I really like the dry sound for Jaws and the Tombstone theme, but I haven't been able to find anything reliable and readable. I considered Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, but the brass instrumentation (6/4/3/2) is a bit heavy for what I'm after.

I'd love to hear reference-score recommendations if anyone has them.

    Cheers,

    Sam

  2. I've used Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe, and Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand to help balance... because Ravel uses so many colors in those, and many of them are pretty exposed, it helps me "drill down" and find their location in an isolated context.

The scores are also pretty cheap to get... Daphnis and Chloe is a Dover score, and is like 30 bucks. Oh, and both pieces are absolutely phenomenal. :)

  3. I don't have any recommendations for specific scores, but you could find free scores at www.imslp.org if you want to use anything that's in public domain. I haven't used the site for scores yet, but I've had a lot of success finding materials to practice on piano.

  4. So far I've gone with Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra and got the score from imslp.org. The first phrase uses standard instrumentation, but I'll have to undercook the brass for the rest of the opening.

  5. I believe the full score to Tombstone is available for purchase.

You can also buy selections from Jaws from Hal Leonard’s Williams Signature scores. There are also excepts from the score in Norman Ludwin’s orchestration e-books with excellent analysis.

  6. Thanks Jeff. I was looking around some more and I think I did see a Hal Leonard release for Tombstone.

  7. Where is Tombstone for sale? Are you sure you don't mean "Silverado" from OmniMusicPublishing.com?

  8. You can get "Music from Tombstone" from SheetMusicPlus and JWPepper, but it's an arrangement for band. It's not the original version.

  9. Sorry, I was thinking of Silverado.
