1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Back to the Future Mockup

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Will Armitage, Oct 28, 2017.

  1. Hey Will. Cool Mockup..a bit too much reverb and the articulation would benefit from a bit more bite. Just observed that after a short listen on my laptop. Why you do a mockup of that track? Transcribing? Balancing. Anyways I am interested to hear from you and thank you for sharing.

  2. Hey Alex,

Thanks for taking the time to listen! I had two main goals. My first goal was to create a mockup purely off the sheet music, without referencing the original recording. I succeeded for the most part, I only made two changes based off the original (I decreased the volume of the strings stem/decreased the volume of the timpani hits for the final version). My second was to increase my efficiency in creating mockups. I refined my workflow a tad based on what I learned. Totally agree about the reverb and articulation. Berlin Brass is a difficult library to work with. I think in terms of sound quality, it's the best on the market, but using 3+ patches for a single line is a tad tedious. The library overall lacks bite. I've increased the treble in the brass, and maxed out the velocity, but if you have any recommendation on any other methods I could use to make it more articulate, I would greatly appreciate it.

  3. Hey Will,

Thank you for the reply. Yeah makes sense what you write. I will give your mockup a listen tomorrow on my studio speakers to see if there is anything else. I head many good things about Berlin Brass but I am afraid in increasing treble won´t fix that problem so much instead of overpronouncing and creating some harsh highs, and even worse ruining the perception of yuour hearing distance probably also. What might help is to layer here the longs with some marcato or better some very crisp shorts. Did you try that out? I don´t know but I would try to find the articulation in BB which gives some of your lines a bit more definition. Probably using a bit more of close micings can help also with that. Maybe try both.

  4. Good work on this. I wish I had the mixing skill to help with that element, but I don't.

I also love the sound of Berlin Brass and have been using it in my latest (hobby) tracks. As much as I like the sound of Berlin Brass, I am frustrated with its very narrow dynamic range and inconsistencies. I do not like the idea of layering samples as it gets too easy to fool ourselves about what is really possible with live players, but @Alexander Schiborr is exactly right in the case of Berlin Brass. I have been forced to do layering with BB to simulate a fortissimo and also a stronger sustain attack. You can layer the marcato patch (either version depending on context) with the sustain immediate patch to get the punch you are looking for. And in this case, I don't think it is cheating. I also recently purchased Adventure Brass based on the recommendation of @Mike Verta and I am finding it very flexible when you want a full section sound. Also, you only have to use one patch. :)

  5. @Will Armitage

Just listening on my monitors: First the brass...man..you pushed that nasty midi / highs..too much...it is biting in my ears a lot...don´t do that. It sounds very honky..AND..the brass is way too loud, brass on ff is loud, but not like that. You have to rebalance that I would say.
