    Hi everyone,

Looking to up my game in composition. Here's a track from some time ago when I was trying to emulate some sort of Bernard Hermann style. This is a NotePerformer export from Sibelius, apologies for the sound quality.

Having taken a bunch of Mike classes I can tell there are a lot of issues on this track already but sharing anyway for any critique.

    Thanks
    - Matt

It's amazing how good NotePerformer is considering how little memory and CPU resources it uses. While of course you want a better midi-performance, one can get a firm idea of how this composition will ultimately sound.

The opening is very good in my opinion and very "Bernard Hermann". I like the piece. It begins to lose the B..H. sound after about 1 minute, although glimpses of B.H. keep sneaking back in. Another great section at 2:10 then back to your romantic theme, which does not really work nearly as well. I would suggest keeping some kind of motion going, either in the theme itself or the accompaniment.. Also don't let your harmony get too "straight" in the romance section. Use altered scales or even modulate in the melody itself to sound more like B.H.

  3. Rests (negative space) are your friend. Use them. I can't really go into all the detail now, but in the near future I am going to write Alexander and use BH as an example. You need to work on your "scheme". That's his magic.

for what it is worth, I was once asked to write in a BH style
