Mixing orchestra

I am going to give you the most useless, but also the most sincere answer. To my ears this sounds absolutely gorgeous and I wouldn't change a thing. That said, I don't consider myself much of a mixing expert. @Aaron Venture is the guru in that area here . I am sure he might still have a tip or two, I frankly trust his ears a bit better than my own.

That said, I really dig this whole thing! And I don't mean that in a "I love pizza" kind of way, no this honestly moved me. Everything from the composition down to the orchestration and mixing is just right in my opinion. Bringing it back down to the mixing aspect, I especially dig the "warmth" of the strings, they sound very full and rich which can be partially explained by the strings playing so low, but is certainly also affected by the engineering and mixing that went into this.

I am sorry I don't have any specific advice, but I felt that simply saying that this sounds very good to someone else might still be valuable feedback. The most important question, of course, is whether you like it or not. While there's some degree of objectively good or bad mixing, there's also a large degree of subjectiveness to it. If you're pleased with it and there aren't any glaring issue, why change it? Food for thought...

 

Nice piece. I actually like the first mix better, though the wider panning is nice in #2. My taste (starting from #2) would be a bit less midrange (1k-ish?), a bit more bass, and some more reverb. A/B with some of your favorite-sounding stuff.

Wow, that v1 was noisy as hell

Version 2 was better, and version 3 sounds pretty good. I think that the crash cymbal jumps out a bit. If that's the tree sound, then you'll have to do with some multiband compression to tame it. If it's the cymbal mic making it jump out, do it there. If you want it to be brighter, you'll need some de-noise.

Where was this recorded, if you don't mind my asking?

@Thomas Bryla the composition is very beautiful. The third mix is just terrific, and a big improvement over 1 and 2. I listened on both my consumer desktop speakers and on my music room monitors. Both sound perfect.
