Alan Silvestri - Ready Player One (Influences)

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Jan Rothenbusch, Feb 1, 2021.

  1. Hey guys,
I've been listening to the main theme to Ready Player One by Alan Silvestri for the last few days.
There are some easy to spot influences like the Holy Grail theme by J.Williams at 0:18 or the Horner-esque vibe at 1:28.
But the one thing i can't fully trace back is the part at 0:51.
I'm pretty sure it's another tribute to Williams, since the major-7th brass voicings very much sound like him.
Do you guys have any idea which film score or cue by Williams he might have referenced for that part?

  2. Closest thing that comes to mind is bars 5 & 6 of the Superman theme.

To my ears this sounds more in the style of Goldsmith - particularly the minor 3rd key shifts. I'm just surprised that Alan decided to start in Ab and not G. If you want to listen where this and everyone of JW's marches come from check out William Walton Crown Imperial. Also, the Holy Grail theme is inspired by Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis.

  4. Thanks for your insight. I will definitely take a look at those pieces!
