No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Group transcription for June 29 -July 4th

Discussion in 'Score Study Resources' started by Doug Gibson, Jun 30, 2020.

  1. Anyone got anything on the go.

I don't have an agenda or framework really. Just meant to give us the discipline to keep on learning.

Not sure for myself what to pick. I will come back later today to let ya'll know

  2. What about this? Unfortunately it seems to cut before the end but there is a complete recording on spotify.

There's a nice John Wilson recording with beautiful trombone playing, or a Williams Boston Pops job too. Scoreless as usual...

  3. What a wonderful score. I am embarrassed to say I have never heard it before you posted it.

Not for long! Just a start, but I'll get there.

  4. Wow, this transcription is coming along nicely! Do you have any tips for recognizing how many strings are playing, how voices are distributed, where divisi are happening, etc? Admittedly I have very little experience here, but in recordings like this, the strings always sound like an undifferentiated mass of “stringed instrument” to me.

Go Doug! Flying along at your usual screaming pace. I’m embarrassed to say I failed to join you but given the circumstances here now I will be rectifying my delay in the coming weeks.

It is simply an absolute corker of a melody. Totally and utterly sumptuous. There’s a nice recording of Bill Evans playing this tune solo (I think it’s on a record with Tony Bennett). I will report back and we can exchange notes. I also like JW arrangement on ‘Salute to Hollywood’.

  6. Sigh..... I know. I am in Brunswick East. This lock down is going to be tough.

  7. Hmm. I wish I did. I couldn't do this one without a piano. I don't have perfect pitch, so it is always a case of detective work.

You know what I have done is first transcribe the solo trombone (melody) for a whole section. I did that, and will continue to do so
    before working on the strings.

You just got to give it your all, and do your best with whatever you have.

For example, the melody begins with Bb, C, then up to F.

I picked out the bass note: Eb.

At this point I just thought (verbally) to myself: if I stack Bb,C,F vertically over an Eb what chord is that. Ah a Eb6/9

I tried it at the piano and it sounded like what I was hearing.

My point is I use my fingers, and theoretical knowledge too. It's like trying to sort out a puzzle. For me.
I have no idea what it is like for people with advanced absolute pitch

  8. Ah interesting. What you’re describing is exactly how I approach the “notes and rhythms” part of transcription. I don’t have perfect pitch either, but my ear for that sort of thing is pretty good at this point. Seems from what you’re saying like it’s just a matter of practicing and applying the same approach to timbre - just learning to recognize through practice the different ways, say, a 5-note chord could be distributed over violins, violas, and cellos. Thanks for your insight!

    Update:

Had about an hour to work on this today and added on another 20 seconds or so.

  10. Getting started on this today. Here's my attempt at the opening measures. Definitely think I've overshot it with the strings divisi at the top.

Going to keep going now with the first time through the melody.

  11. Nice Doug. I'd love to exchange notes. I've definitely entered some very 'dark' places at some points and feel like I must be pretty close at others. Definitely doing a lot of guesswork so shows I've got a long way to go with this style. Wish I could follow it up with the original score!

Here's my first bit of the melody. As I said the first bit of the melody in the strings is definitely somewhere weird and the first beat of the second measure I've got it wrong too.

Hey ! Bravo ! Way to go. I will certainly share my score once I reach the finish line. I'm not going to look too close at yours until then.

Mine is no authoritative edition to be sure. Fuck....something about the next section makes my head spin. It's such a wash of color.
I am sure there are mistakes galore in mine. But, hey......that means we are learning.

The only thing I would say about yours, and I was going to make this comment earlier to you: I think it is actually all in 4/4.

I know.....the meter feels all "wonky-donky", but after many listens I am pretty sure everything is just plain old 4/4.

Anyhow...... here is my updated version. Good luck......man those are some murky waters.

Look forward to seeing your work, and happy to have you on the journey !

    Doug

  13. Update: July 14th

Ahh..... feeling good. Reached the halfway mark and the rest is a variation on what I've already transcribed.

    Gonna make it !

  14. @Felix Watson

How is the transcription coming along on your end?

Nice Doug. I'm currently swimming my way through the first time curly strings melody at 50s. Trying to blast my way through this weekend. Reckon the rest will come quick after I find my way through this bit... Still some holes here to fill in.

Nice Doug. I'm halfway :) Had a few sick days but don't worry I'm only normal sick.

    EDIT:

I can see the finish too. Up to the final recap

  18. Right I'm done! Definitely far from perfect. Felt like I was my most accurate in the middle and the rest was lots of forgery. How'd you finish up @Doug Gibson?

PS. I take back the 'Ballad Swing' marking on the drumset for obvious reasons.

  20. Felix, you really worked your ass off on this. I don't know the piece myself, but it looks like a great job.
