1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

1 Theme, 20 Orchestrations

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Mattia Chiappa, Mar 29, 2020.

  1. Hello!

Out of boredom I started making a few random variations of this simple melody but then I got into it and kept expanding. It wasn't necessarily meant to be a useful exercise but I had a ton of fun making this and I thought I'd share it with you.

  2. Isn't this a prime example for a composers exercise?
I mean, if you are able to do that (I am sure that I am not!) then you absolutely know what Mike means when he stresses the term "horizontal development" ;-)
    Thumbs up! I like it!

  3. ???? How so

  4. I thought that horizontal development means to develop a theme or an idea by repurposing it over and over (without getting boring or loosing the context) versus vertical development which means to develop a theme or an idea by simply making it louder (adding more instruments over and over no matter if it gets boring ;))
    Sorry if I miss something?

  5. Wow, this is fantastic! Some really great textures in here. I'm really impressed by some of these, samples, too. Really cool developments!

  6. If this is what boredom sounds like, I hope you get bored more often! (I shudder to think what you'll do in an inspired mood!)

    These were my favorites:

2 - that horn just sounds so good.
3 - I really like the motion in this and the woods sound very lovely
    5 - I'm a sucker for bombastic marches so...
7 - Cool, completely different vibe. Don't think I didn't hear that last downward run you cheeky bastard.
11 - Is it obvious I like woodwinds? Well, I like woodwinds, I think you do too.
15 - This somehow made me think of John Powell's How to train your dragon, and that's a great association in my book!
    16 - Woodwinds, quirky, I'm sold.
17 - Who doesn't like nice and full?
20 - Hello there Alex Ball.

  7. That's essentially it, but this isn't really a development on a theme as much as it's re-orchestrating it. Re-orchestration has its place in a developed score, most assuredly, but this isn't strictly development per se. Not to take away from this exercise, mind you.

  8. Not arguing with you at all. Was trying to draw a "Socratic Circle".

Thanks for your support guys! Yeah, the hard part would still be to further develop the one idea into a piece of music.

  10. Some great work here. I think you could turn this into a nice orchestral piece.
