1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

    **Update**
The app is now available on the Play Store. You can find the free version here, and the paid version here.
If you want a detailed explanation of what's included with the app, check out the website here.

Over the last few months I've been developing an instrumentation app for composers, conductors, orchestrators, etc. The app serves two purposes:
    1. Quick, cheap, and easy access to orchestral instrumentation (range, transposition, registers, timbre, clefs and tuning).
    2. Help students and professionals to memorise orchestral instrumentation.
I'm now at the internal-testing stage and am looking for some people to help out. Here's what would be required of you:
    • Take a free copy of the app.
    • Use it.
    • Let me know what's good/bad/broken.
At the moment the app is only available on Android devices using version '5.0 Lollipop' or higher. You'll also need a Gmail address to participate. I hope to release on iOS at a later date, but for now it's Android only.

If you're interested send me a message, or respond below and I'll get in contact with you.

I've included a couple of screenshots below so you can see what it all looks like, and a copy of the store listing.

Instrumentation Tutor provides orchestral instrumentation at a glance for more than 30 instruments. It also includes a quiz function to help you memorise what the orchestra's instruments can and can't do.

Instrumentation details include range, transposition, registers, timbre, clefs and tuning.

A list of the included instruments is below.

    - Woodwind: Piccolo, Flute, Alto Flute, Oboe, English Horn, B♭ Clarinet, A Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Contrabassoon.

    - Brass: Horn, C Trumpet, B♭ Trumpet, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Tuba.

    - Pitched Percussion: Timpani, Chimes, Glockenspiel, Xylophone.

    - Unpitched Percussion: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals, Suspended Cymbals, Tam-Tam.

    - Plucked Strings: Harp.

    - Keyboards: Piano, Celesta.

    - Bowed Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Contrabass.

  4. I can attest that @Sam Miller has put in a lot of time and effort on this project. This digital resource is definitely more portable, scalable, and easier to add new features than some of our old school text/audio bundles. The quiz feature is a really nice "flash card" way to reinforce what you've learned.

I hope this app can be a useful resource/refresher and a good jumping off point for people at all stages. I look forward to seeing the iOS version and seeing what new features you're planning to add. Congrats Sam.

  5. Thanks for the kind words, Bradley. And thanks for your help and insight during the data-collection process!

  6. This looks awesome and I'd love to try it out!

  7. Thanks Mauro. PM sent!

  8. I'd like to participate. I teach high school classes for a living so I already have some ideas (if you haven't already implemented them).

  9. Happy to have you on board John. PM sent.

  10. Sounds great. I use iOS, so I cant be a tester, but looking forward to see how this app evolves. Would be interesting if you could hear the instruments as well, and how they sound in different ranges

  11. Thanks Haakon. I'm looking into options for iOS, but Apple doesn't make it easy.
Being able to hear the instruments would be fantastic, but prohibitively expensive to do from scratch. A compromise could be to provide examples from the repertoire and link to scores on IMSLP.

Rohann, thanks for the offer. PM sent.

  12. Hi @Sam Miller ,

If you are still in need of testers, I'd love to give it a shot!

  13. Highly recommend this especially for people new to composition, it's invaluable to have something like this handy while transcribing, especially if you are putting in the effort to learn transposed instruments.

  14. I'd love to try it! I'm on iPhone though - is it available yet for iOS?

  15. Thanks Rohann!

Hey George, still nothing for iOS, but here's where I'm at.

I initially planned to release simultaneously on the App Store, but I've since found out that it's pay-to-play, unlike Google's Play Store. It's not a huge amount of money, but I'm not sure whether the app will make enough money to get a return on my investment. So the next task is to release on the Play Store and see how things go. If it earns enough to cover the App-Store release, then I'll move on to the next stage.

The next stage is to learn Visual Studio (VS) and one of its in-built coding languages. Using VS will allow me to do most of my coding in one environment, then write a small amount of code to implement the app on Android and iOS. However, it will require learning a new language for VS and Apple's own language, as well as buying OSX and setting it up on another computer.

The final obstacle is that I'm not a coder. I only recently learnt Java to make this app and I'm still pretty slow, but I've had a look at VS and Apple's language and it seems to be doable.

I can't give you a time frame because I don't have enough experience to make any educated guesses. But I'll be sure to post any changes/progress here to keep you in the loop.

  16. Is there an emulator or something I could use to open it on my iMac?

  17. I had a quick search online and there's definitely a few out there. However, it seems to be a mixed bag when it comes to potential bloatware, lag and ease of use.
The link below has a list of options if you want to check them out. I'm downloading KO Player to test out, but it'll still be on PC.

  18. New to the forum and just spotted this. Is this still in development? - I'd be pleased to give it a trial. I can't find it on the Play Store...
