Instrumentation App - Testers Wanted

Over the last few months I've been developing an instrumentation app for composers, conductors, orchestrators, etc. The app serves two purposes:

1. Quick, cheap, and easy access to orchestral instrumentation (range, transposition, registers, timbre, clefs and tuning).
2. Help students and professionals to memorise orchestral instrumentation.

I'm now at the internal-testing stage and am looking for some people to help out. Here's what would be required of you:

• Take a free copy of the app.
• Use it.
• Let me know what's good/bad/broken.

At the moment the app is only available on Android devices using version '5.0 Lollipop' or higher. You'll also need a Gmail address to participate. I hope to release on iOS at a later date, but for now it's Android only.

Instrumentation Tutor provides orchestral instrumentation at a glance for more than 30 instruments. It also includes a quiz function to help you memorise what the orchestra's instruments can and can't do.

Instrumentation details include range, transposition, registers, timbre, clefs and tuning.

A list of the included instruments is below.

- Woodwind: Piccolo, Flute, Alto Flute, Oboe, English Horn, B♭ Clarinet, A Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Contrabassoon.

- Brass: Horn, C Trumpet, B♭ Trumpet, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Tuba.

- Pitched Percussion: Timpani, Chimes, Glockenspiel, Xylophone.

- Unpitched Percussion: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals, Suspended Cymbals, Tam-Tam.

- Plucked Strings: Harp.

- Keyboards: Piano, Celesta.

- Bowed Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Contrabass.

Thanks Haakon. I'm looking into options for iOS, but Apple doesn't make it easy.
Being able to hear the instruments would be fantastic, but prohibitively expensive to do from scratch. A compromise could be to provide examples from the repertoire and link to scores on IMSLP.

Hey George, still nothing for iOS, but here's where I'm at.

I initially planned to release simultaneously on the App Store, but I've since found out that it's pay-to-play, unlike Google's Play Store. It's not a huge amount of money, but I'm not sure whether the app will make enough money to get a return on my investment. So the next task is to release on the Play Store and see how things go. If it earns enough to cover the App-Store release, then I'll move on to the next stage.

The next stage is to learn Visual Studio (VS) and one of its in-built coding languages. Using VS will allow me to do most of my coding in one environment, then write a small amount of code to implement the app on Android and iOS. However, it will require learning a new language for VS and Apple's own language, as well as buying OSX and setting it up on another computer.

The final obstacle is that I'm not a coder. I only recently learnt Java to make this app and I'm still pretty slow, but I've had a look at VS and Apple's language and it seems to be doable.

I can't give you a time frame because I don't have enough experience to make any educated guesses. But I'll be sure to post any changes/progress here to keep you in the loop.

 

I had a quick search online and there's definitely a few out there. However, it seems to be a mixed bag when it comes to potential bloatware, lag and ease of use.
