No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Modulation class

Discussion in 'Info, Requests, etc.' started by Jeff Laity, Apr 14, 2018.

  1. Mike has talked about a modulation chart that he made. How to get from C to Db, C to D, all the way around. It was going to be a free YouTube class I think? He mentions it in a few classes. Did this become "The Mod Squad?" Or is it somewhere else that I missed?

  2. Perhaps you mean this one? @9:10

  3. Yeah, it's in that Unleashed class ^^

Someone was kind enough to make this:

  4. Perfect, thank you.

  5. Thanks for posting the file. Haven't compared it (the transcription) to the video (which I watched), but there's some errors in the harmonic analysis. For people that haven't seen the video, or need a summary, it shows some common modulation techniques:
    • common tones
    • borrowed/modal chords to create ii-V-I's to the new key
    • suspensions & harmonic pedal points
    • sequences
It is nice to have these references. Some other places to look for modulation inspiration:
    • church organists have been studying these patterns forever (going from hymn to hymn and stuff)
    • jazz standards (learn how to use a variety of pre-dominant and dominant chords to tonicize a new key)

  6. Never thought of this, good point.

  7. Basic stuff, always great to refresh the memory :)
