1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Chick and Herbie Critique

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Dick Wallingford, May 20, 2020.

  1. This isn't from me.
But someone sent it to me and would like to see how Jazz might improve beyond this "free form paradigm".
Some of my friends are saying that the virus will make us end up with this Jazz. To me it was too disturbing to contemplate, hence my asking here. Hans Groiner might be an oracle to consult.

  2. Ha !! You had me there for about 2 minutes. I could actually believe Chick Corea played something this lame.

There is no middle ground, for me, with that guy. I have seen him in concert I think 6 or 7 times and there have been some duds.

    But.....not this bad!

    That's funny. I love these "Shred" meme's.

Here are two of my favorite

This first one is great, the second one is only funny when he says "You must caress the notes"

  3. Thank you for confusing the hell out of me.

  4. I didn't know these "shred memes" even existed. The Chick and Herbie thing above truly confused the everlovin' crap out of me at first.

The two you posted are also very funny. Especially the Gould one.

  5. Some of this stuff is too funny.

  6. During the virus, it is nice to use some spare time to improve ourselves. For me I always wondered about Maiden Voyage.
Hans clears everything up on the confusing Fsus4 notation. It's F and, of course, sustain, 4 "sustain for...... you decide"

  7. In all seriousness, though, the guy above is the genius and master Larry Goldings.
Check out this wonderful tune with Michael Brecker and Metheny. Mike feel free to move this thread somewhere less serious; I didn't give much thought into where I started it :)

  8. Oh, interesting. I knew him from the 'Don Simmons" band. I think he was in that band for over a decade.

In case you don't know Don Simmons

  9. I'm tempted to make one of these.

  10. That Jacob Collier video is hilarious!

I owe so much to Hans Groiner for teaching me how to use drop 2 voicings, turnarounds, upper structures and the correct way to play Monk.
